The Carter Jr. High School PTA held its first general meeting of the new school year in the school gym on August 28, 2018, starting at 5:45 pm. The meeting preceded a school open house at 6:15.
This PTA is a community PTA, which means that membership is open to all members of the community, whether they have family connections to students in the school or not. At the founding meeting last fall the non-faculty members were all community members, among whom were three HANA members, City Council Member Lana Wolff, and members of nearby churches.
This fall’s meeting was an entirely different affair. It was well advertised to the Carter community of parents and guardians of students, and a large number of them attended, bringing along family members of all ages. The meeting was conducted by our new president, Melvin Canales, in both English and Spanish. He introduced all of this year’s PTA officers, most of whom speak little or no Spanish, and translated our remarks into Spanish for the benefit of audience members whose command of English is as poor as our command of Spanish.
Mr. Canales urged the parents who were present to join the PTA and to participate in school activities and help make Carter the outstanding junior high school in Arlington. He was joined by Carter’s new principal, Mrs. Claudia Morales Herrera, who also addressed the audience in both English and Spanish. She expressed great enthusiasm for her new assignment and promised to hold students to high standards and continue the progress Carter has made in recent years.
A number of parents attending the meeting joined the PTA and paid their dues. The open house at the school that followed was also well attended according to reports, with teachers in their classrooms meeting many students and parents during the event. So the school year is off to a good start.
Watch for an announcement of a social event at the school planned for sometime in September.
